Crushing It How Great Entrepreneurs Build Their Business and Influence — And How You Can, Too by Gary Vaynerchuk

Excerpt from the book:

“There will always be people around you to tell you not to do things. You have to let yourself be the sole judge and jury…. Sit down with the people you care most about and say, “I am going to do something I should have done ages ago. The only thing that stopped me was my fear of what you’d say… In the long term, I’m going to win, and it would mean the world to me to know you’ve got my back and are hoping for my success, not waiting for my failure.” — Gary Vaynerchuk

This particularly resonated with me as I too have faced this when I told my parents that I was going to join the U.S. Marine Corps, and now that I have decided to strike out on my own as a writer.

Although it took sometime for my parents to come around, I know they got my back. It wasn’t an easy conversation though.

My thoughts:

I took out the best pieces of similar advice that I found from the success stories and also from Gary. Here they are:

  • CARE. Care about your customers and those who enjoy your content.
  • Work 10-12 hours a day, 6 to 7 days a week. (Starting a business it a lot of work)
  • Collaborate with your community.
  • Stay ahead of the competition, one eye on your work, one eye on what’s trending.
  • Focus on being the best.
  • No one who played it safe made it big, you have to take risks.
  • Be authentic and true to who YOU are, don’t be fake.

I highlighted practically half the book and have sticky notes on things I need to do. I think I’ll leave it at that.

Practical life application:

There are opportunities all around you. You just have to train your eye to see it. Then, you have to bust your tail. A lot.
