The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts by Gary Chapman.
Excerpt from the book:
“Refuse to interrupt. Research has indicated that the average individual listens for only seventeen seconds before interrupting and interjecting his own ideas. If I give you my undivided attention while you are talking, I will refrain from defending myself or hurling accusations at you or dogmatically stating my position. My goal is to discover your thoughts and feelings. My objective is not to defend myself or to set you straight. It is to understand you.” – Gary Chapman.
I know, I’ve been guilty of doing this. When we are in the heat of the moment, we let our emotions and our ego take control. We push away those we care about, to have the sense of being right. But, at what cost? Is it even worth it?
My thoughts:
Gary Chapman does an incredible job simplifying not just intimate relationships, but any relationship. This book is a guide for anyone who wants to better their relations with their loved ones, friends, co-workers, and partners.
Ultimately, this book is about the human condition, and how we should all be treated, with respect and love. Corny, I know, but there’s nuggets of gold in every chapter.
Practical life application:
Let’s try to listen to others more, not in an attempt to “solve” their problems, but to understand and empathize.
